November 2-Kelheim Germany

Today was 'shift' day. We had packed our suitcases last night and had them outside the cabin door at 7:00 for pickup and transfer to M/S Adagio. The shift is caused by low water in the canal between Regensburg and Kelheim.

In the meantime, we bused into Kelheim, about 1 1/2 hours down the road for a tour and a self found lunch. Before getting into Kelheim, we were treated to a side trip visiting the "Liberation Memorial", a grand domed building raised by King Leopold I from 1842 to 1861. He had it built to commemorate the defeat of Napolean. It was magnificent to see and our visit was not part of the pre planned agenda.

After the visit, we were bused down the hill to the parking lot outside the gates of Kelheim. The city is rather small, probably 8 square blocks. We wandered around quite a bit until we found a restaurant in the back of an ice cream store. Naturally, there was beer on the menu.

After the pickup, we were bused for another half hour to a separate suburb where four different groups of 8 were dropped of at "Home House" visits. These houses are local residents who host smallish groups of tourists for "Kafe Klatches" for local flavors. We were able to ask and answer questions with the host lady about the way of life for the Bavarian citizens. Very delightful 90 minutes with our host. She was exceptionally animated and gestured a bunch.

Bused back to the ship and had the 'standard' night of a few drinks, dinner and bedtime. Tomorrow is Nurenburg and an extensive tour. Looking forward to it.
