Sunday, Nov. 4-Bamburg-Day 9
A
short bus ride into the City Center which actually is the City Hall
built on an island in the middle of the Main river to spite the residing
prince-bishop. Long way of saying this is a non-destroyed old German
town from lotsa decades ago. There is a university here with 8,000
students and 740 teachers, a very highly sought after learning spot
The
city of Bamburg has more than 2,000 buildings listed by UNESCO as a
"World Cultural and Natural Heritage of Mankind" site in 1993.
Everywhere we walked we saw reasons for that designation.

The Prince-Bishop of Bamburg had a palace built on the hill overlooking Bamburg and, because he could, he had the cathedral built right next to it so he could go to church under an arch connecting the two.

Across the square from the Cathedral and overlooking the City of Bamburg was the rose garden in a courtyard. The view from the edge of the courtyard overlooking the city was magnificent.

Our program director had been going on (ad nauseum) about the 'Smoky Beer' or Reichbier that is only available in Bamburg. He boasted (complained, enjoyed?) that the first taste was akin to drinking an ashtray. Several of us sampled the beer and I am now addicted to ashtrays. Different taste that took a bit of adjusting but actually quite nice.

We were all back aboard by 1:00 as the captain had a long trek into Wurzburg.
Several of the 'gang of twelve' played Trivia and we actually won first prize, two bottles of wine!
Looking forward to getting to Wurzburg. Most of the ship is going on a bus trip to Rotenburg to see that delightful walled city but we are staying in Wurzburg to wander in depth.
Ciao........
